Chicago Fire goalkeeper Bryan Dowd has been loaned to Huntsville City SC of MLS Next Pro for the remainder of the 2024 season, the club confirmed this morning. Huntsville is the reserve team for Nashville SC.

Dowd, a former Chicago Fire Academy goalkeeper, was selected sixth overall in the MLS SuperDraft out of Notre Dame. It was initially thought that he would be the go-to goalkeeper in MLS Next Pro for Chicago Fire II, but he has yet to debut and has been jumped in the pecking order by 16-year-old prospect Patrick Los.

Dowd's status as the fourth-string goalkeeper behind Chris Brady, Spencer Richey, and Jeff Gal, as well as the development of Patrick Los and Patryk Stechnij from the academy, made a loan the best way for him to find minutes. Los and Stechnij were the two keepers in the squad for Fire II's most recent match, though Richey and Gal have both received opportunities to get minutes this season.

Huntsville needed a new goalkeeper, and their leaky defense led to a 4-0 defeat to Fire II in Alabama earlier this month. Incidentally, Dowd was an unused substitute for Chicago as Los played the full 90 minutes.

Nashville will have an option to trade for Dowd at the end of the season should they choose to bring him in permanently. He is under contract with the Fire thru the end fo the 2024 season, but has option years in 2025, 2026, and 2027.

Dowd is the fifth player from the Fire's supplemental roster to be sent on loan this season. Missael Rodríguez is currently excelling at Union Omaha in USL League One, Victor Bezerra is at Detroit City in the USL Championship, Laurence Wootton is at Indy Eleven, and fullback Justin Reynolds recently returned from a short-term loan to FC Lugano in Switzerland.
