The Chicago Fire tonight announced the free agent signing of longtime U.S. international Kellyn Acosta. The midfielder signs to a TAM deal.

Acosta has been a target for the Fire dating back to the fall, with the 28-year-old viewed among the team’s top targets in the offseason. The midfielder assessed his options both in-league and overseas before settling on the Fire.

“We’re very pleased that Kellyn has joined the Club, as he was our primary target in free agency in the offseason,” said Sporting Director Georg Heitz in a press release tonight. “We wanted to add a well-rounded central midfielder with strong leadership qualities and a track record of success... Kellyn choosing the Fire at this stage of his career shows that he fully believes in our vision to build a Club that is one of the top teams in MLS.”

Acosta became a free agent off the back of two successful seasons with LAFC. He was instrumental in the Black and Gold reaching back-to-back MLS Cups in 2022 and 2023 as well as the final of the CONCACAF Champions League in 2023.

Acosta has been with the team for a few days already as the move was finalized. He was pictured numerous times in attendance at the Fire’s preseason matches against Austin FC and LAFC in recent days.

The Fire now have 22 players on their Senior Roster, meaning two players must leave before the roster compliance deadline on February 23rd. Kacper Przybyłko has been linked with a move away from the club and is currently training with FC Lugano as he works on finding a new team in Europe.
