Sources: Carlos Terán Sold to Athletico Paranaense
Carlos Terán is on the way to Athletico Paranaense in a permanent move, sources told MIR97 Media. The Colombian's departure was heavily rumored in the Brazilian media in the last 24 hours and was completed last night.
Terán, 24, joined the Chicago Fire in 2020 in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and has spent almost exactly five seasons in MLS. He made 90 appearances in that time, scoring five goals throughout an injury-riddled spell in the Windy City. Terán came to the Fire's downtown training center this morning to say goodbye to teammates and staff and left the facility shortly before the start of first team training.
The fee the Fire receive exceeds $2 million US, and that will be converted to General Allocation Money for next season. The team has already spent some GAM to acquire Terán's short-term replacement on the roster, 29-year-old Canadian defender Joel Waterman from CF Montréal.

While Terán is clearly a very talented and physically gifted defender, his frequent injury problems meant he could never really establish himself as a pivotal figure in Chicago. Additionally, he never seemed like the best fit for Gregg Berhalter's system, and the Fire now have the ability to sign someone they feel will help the team more with the way that they want to play.
